{"id":3145,"date":"2019-09-25T13:44:59","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T11:44:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alpujarraturistica.com\/municipios\/orgiva\/"},"modified":"2019-10-10T13:35:58","modified_gmt":"2019-10-10T11:35:58","slug":"orgiva","status":"publish","type":"municipios","link":"https:\/\/www.alpujarraturistica.com\/en\/municipios\/orgiva\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00d3rgiva"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Agustines<\/strong> y <strong>T\u00edjola<\/strong> is in a sunny spot in the Gua-dalfeo valley, and is made up of a number of farmhouses dotted around the hillside. <strong>Alc\u00e1zar<\/strong> is made up of a number of hamlets which have been quite important in the past, such as Fregenite, Ol\u00edas, and Bargis. <strong>Fregenite<\/strong> and <strong>Ol\u00edas<\/strong> are in the upper part of the Rambla de Ol\u00edas. <strong>Bargis<\/strong> is on the right bank of the Rambla del Bargis, while <strong>Alc\u00e1zar<\/strong> is on the right bank of the Rambla de Alc\u00e1zar. All of the hamlets in Alc\u00e1zar are built on hillsides. <strong>Las Barreras<\/strong> is to the west of the village of \u00d3rgiva on the other side of the R\u00edo Sucio. It is a village of scattered houses, although most of them are near the road. <strong>Bayacas<\/strong> is on the right bank of the R\u00edo Chico, sheltered by the Sierra Nevada to the north and the Sierra de L\u00fajar to the south. <strong>Cerro Negro<\/strong> is on the left bank of the R\u00edo Seco. <strong>Pago y Benisalte<\/strong> is to the southwest of the village of \u00d3rgiva, between the right bank of the R\u00edo Chico and the left bank of the R\u00edo Sucio. <strong>Sortes-Rabiete-ABC<\/strong> is to the north of the village of \u00d3rgiva, in the low ridges between the R\u00edo Sucio and R\u00edo Seco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Los Tablones<\/strong> is on a gentle slope on the left bank of the R\u00edo Guadalfeo. Its name (which means \u201clarge planks\u201d) is derived from the large planks of wood produced using the trees in the Sierra de L\u00fajar and taken to Adra to build boats. Finally, <strong>\u00d3rgiva<\/strong> is to the north of the R\u00edo Guadalfeo, on a gentle slope in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. It is the most important town in the municipal district, and most of the municipality\u2019s shops and businesses are found here. It is also the administrative centre of the Alpujarra of Granada, and is thought of as the capital of the Alpujarra. Located at the confluence of the R\u00edo Guadalfeo and its tributary the R\u00edo Chico, \u00d3rgiva traditionally supplied the rest of the region with the products that it has needed over the years. In the hamlets in the Sierra de la Contraviesa and Sierra de L\u00fajar, the rooftops are made with Arabic tiles, a feature unique to this particular part of the Alpujarra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"creados-linea wp-block-heading\">Culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00d3rgiva has a rich agricultural and urban heritage, as well as a great many monuments, <em>fiestas<\/em> and its own unique cuisine. The municipality is also still home to some traditional craft workshops, such as the Alfarer\u00eda Cacheriche, a pottery with a working kiln. \u00d3rgiva has its own cultural and literary centre (the Centro Cultural y Literario), and the municipal library is home to one of the largest collections of the book <em>Don Quixote, <\/em>by Miguel de Cervantes, in all sorts of different languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"creados-linea wp-block-heading\"><strong>Typical Cuisine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional recipes in the municipality use locally-grown produce and have been passed down from generation to generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interesting dishes include <strong><em>sopa de pan y ma\u00edz, <\/em><\/strong>a soup made with maize bread, sundried to-<br>\nmatoes, garlic, cumin and bay leaves. <strong><em>Piment\u00f3n de bacalao<\/em><\/strong> is made with dried peppers, cod, potatoes and cumin. Desserts include <strong><em>torta de higos secos,<\/em><\/strong> made with dried figs, eggs, milk and olive oil. <strong><em>Migas<\/em><\/strong> (fried breadcrumbs), <strong><em>huevos fritos con ajos<\/em><\/strong> (fried eggs with garlic) and <strong><em>choto al ajillo<\/em><\/strong> (garlic goat kid) are also popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"creados-linea wp-block-heading\"><strong>History<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00d3rgiva has been identified as the Greek colony Exoche, mentioned by the geographer Ptolemy, although the first written references to the settlement appear in the writings of Al-Udri (11<sup>th<\/sup> century) and Al-Idrisi (12<sup>th<\/sup> century) with the names <em>Yuz Aryuba<\/em> and Hisn Orgiva respectively, as an administrative district and castle of the region of Ilbira during the Al-Andalus period. During the Nasrid dynasty, \u00d3rgiva was the capital of one of the administrative districts (known as <em>tahas<\/em>) and it took the name <em>Albastch,<\/em> meaning \u201cflat\u201d. For centuries, it was known as <strong>Albacete de \u00d3rgiva.<\/strong> In 1492, the Catholic Monarchs gave the area to Boabdil as a place where he could retire. Control of \u00d3rgiva was then handed over to the<em> \u201cGr\u00e1n Cap\u00edtan\u201d<\/em> (\u201cGreat Captain\u201d), Gonzalo Fern\u00e1ndez de C\u00f3rdoba. Later, it was controlled by the Duke of Sessa, the C\u00f3rdoba y Ayala family, the Marquis of Balen\u00e7uela, and finally, the Count of S\u00e1stago.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the request of Isabella II, it became the main town in the judicial district in 1839. A number of archaeological sites dating from the Roman period and medieval times have been found in the municipality, including the Yacimiento de Pedro V\u00e9lez and the Yacimiento de Benisalte. There is also evidence of mining in the Sierra de L\u00fajar, in the form of the Minas de San Jos\u00e9 and the Mina del Cortijo Camacho. One of the key archaeological sites in \u00d3rgiva is the <strong>Necr\u00f3polis de El Pago.<\/strong> This burial site dates from the late Roman period (5<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 7<sup>th<\/sup> centuries), and 23 tombs have been found here. The tombs had been carved out of the rock, with stone slabs on the bottom and sides. 23 human skeletons were found here, as well as fragments of pottery and glass.
